York Police Warn Public About Dangerous Scam

Image of brushing scam items from York Police

York Police are raising awareness about a scam which starts with the victim receiving a package they didn’t order.

Officers say the packages include either a link or QR code that will either lead to the scammer asking for personal information or in some cases infiltrate the victim’s device with malware.

The con is known as a “brushing” scam.

York Police say a resident received a plastic “diamond” ring (pictured) they never ordered and turned it into officers. They say the resident did not scan the QR code.

Officer Mike Taddei contacted our local US Postal Service Investigator, who provided even more insight to brushing scams. Click to learn more.

Also, contrary to what is printed on the boxes in the scam, the certifying agency for diamonds is GIA (Gemological Institute of America), not GRA.
