Town leaders in Waterville are considering yurts to house the area’s homeless population this winter.

According to CBS 13 news, there are about 40 unhoused people living in a camp off of Front Street. The city is considering purchasing up to 10 canvas yurts, which are dome-shaped tents, to be used as shelter during the cold months.

In all, it would cost the town about $10,000.

Waterville Mayor Jay Coelho says keeping people warm is the right thing to do. However, he says it’s not yet clear if the insurance company for the city, or city code, will allow them to do it.

Pending approval from the city’s legal team, Coelho plans to call for a vote on the proposal next week.
