The University of Maine is building a new health and life science complex and is receiving a generous donation.

Senator Susan Collins announced the university will receive $45 million in directed spending in order for the complex to be built.

The Bangor Daily News reports this is the largest federal grant for a single project in the history of Maine.

Collins says the complex will open up more education opportunities, and position UMaine to one day open the very first public medical school.

The project comes after UMaine released a study which showed that construction for a project of this magnitude was financially impossible.

Vice Chancellor Joan Ferrini-Munday said the new complex will be impactful for people across the state.

Ferrini-Munday stated: “[Collins] support for the planned UMaine Health and Life Science Complex will lead to transformation for our flagship university and the well-being for the people of Maine and beyond.”

There is no information on when construction will begin.
