Two people are dead from an apartment building fire in the Munjoy Hill area of Portland overnight Sunday morning.

Portland firefighters were sent to a three-story, four-unit building at 43 St. Lawrence Street at 2:17 a.m. Sunday, where they say they encountered heavy fire conditions on the rear porch.

Two people were found dead inside the building and were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where autopsies will be performed to determine the cause of death and establish identification.

Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office say they worked with the Portland Fire Department and Portland Police throughout the day Sunday on an investigation.

The fire remains under investigation.

Anyone with information or video related to the incident is asked to contact the Portland Police Department at 207.874.8575 or the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office at 207.626. 3870.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to displaced tenants.
