Maine State Police say a 17-year-old boy is in Maine’s youth detention center in connection to the killing of a paddleboarder in Union earlier this month.

The body of 48-year-old Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart of Tenants Harbor was found at about 1 am July 3rd on an island in Crawford Pond after she never returned from a solo paddleboard trip the previous day.

The state Medical Examiner says the cause of her death was strangulation and blunt force trauma.

The 17-year-old suspect was arrested at about 10:30 pm Wednesday, and his name has not been released because he’s a juvenile.

He’s currently in the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.

State police say the killing remains an active and ongoing investigation and are asking anyone with information to call them at 207.624.7076 or by texting MESPTIP to 847411.
