Snowstorms are staring to lineup and head through Maine on a regular basis, with one wrapping up Monday morning with 2-4 inches of accumulation in the Portland area.

Another light snow or freezing rain event is expected late tonight, followed by Arctic air mid-week. Thursday will bring another storm with potential for snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg says the storms are not bringing heavy snowfall totals because of how they started.

“Now we’re getting the storms, but they’re moving along so quickly, and they’re basically coming across the country, rather than originating in the Gulf of Mexico and moving northeastward,” said Lundberg. “And I think the difference is that they don’t have quite the punch that they would if they started down with the more moist conditions of the Gulf of Mexico.”

Lundberg says we’re now in a pattern in Maine of getting a new snowstorm every several days through most of February and possibly into March, with each one bringing just a few inches of accumulation.

“I want to emphasize this is going to be one after another after another,” Lundberg said. “We’ve got the one winding up now. We’ve got another one I think due in Thursday. Then we’ll get a break, until another one probably Saturday night or Sunday. Here comes another one, maybe Wednesday or Thursday of next week, and then another one the following weekend.”

Lundberg says the pattern of ongoing smaller storms will still leave Maine with a decent amount of snow by the end of the season.
