Independent U.S. Senator Angus King is endorsing Democrat Matt Dunlap in the 2nd District House race.
King released a video Tuesday saying he believes Dunlap will make a great member of congress and he looks forward to serving with him.
King says Dunlap made a strong impression on him when they worked together in the State House when King was governor and Dunlap was a lawmaker.
“When you serve as governor, you get to know a lot of legislators, but one I particularly remember is Matt Dunlap because he was tough and smart and a strong advocate for his district,” King said in a video message. “He also has been a great advocate for the sportsmen and women of Maine. In fact, he has a hunting license. He can represent the who le second district in Congress, and that’s what we need.”
Dunlap will faces former Republican Governor Paul LePage in next Tuesday’s election.
Polling has shown a tight race between Dunlap and LePage, although some Republicans have expressed confidence LePage will prevail in a district won by President Trump three times.
The race is drawing some national attention as House Speaker Mike Johnson recently traveled to Maine to campaign with LePage. Democrats are now favored to take control of the House, and a victory by LePage could help stave off that transition.
Dunlap and LePage are vying to replace current Democratic 2nd District Representative Jared Golden, who announced last November that he would not seek reelection.
