Nearly 50 Republican Maine state lawmakers are calling for the firing of a professor at Eastern Maine Community College.

The lawmakers signed a letter, saying Dr. Carol Lewandowski made discriminatory comments to a conservative student who wrote a paper opposing Red Flag laws.

WMTW reports that the EMCC student, Katherine Parker, is also asking for Lewandowski to be fired.

The school says it’s aware of the situation and is reviewing it in order to take appropriate steps.

In an email to the student, Lewandowski said, “you clearly do not care about people as much as you care about guns.”

Lewandowski asked Parker to choose another subject in an English class assignment calling for students to find an opinion piece from a local newspaper about an issue they’re passionate about and write an opposing opinion.

Parker chose an opinion piece in the Portland Press Herald supporting a ballot measure on November’s ballot to establish a Red Flag law in Maine.

Republican state Senators and Representatives sent a letter to the President of the Maine Community College System and the President of EMCC calling for Lewandowski’s firing.

A total of 47 different lawmakers signed the letter.
