Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree was joined by Democratic colleagues on Monday during a hearing on the deadly ICE shooting in Biddeford last month.

Family members of 25-year-old Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, the Colombian man who was shot and killed by an ICE agent, were among those who spoke during the hearing at Biddeford High School.

ICE said Guerrero was in the country illegally but was not the person they were looking to arrest that day.

Pingree said ICE did not have a removal order for their intended target, which was Guerrero’s roommate who owned the car that Guerrero was driving when he was shot.

Pingree was joined by Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee.

Gov. Janet Mills also spoke at the hearing and said the Maine Attorney General’s Office will complete a thorough investigation into the shooting.

In a statement issued Monday, Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey said their office is reviewing the incident to determine whether Maine law allows legal action to address the conduct of ICE agents in the shooting.

Frey’s office said more information will be made publicly available at the appropriate time.
