The American Red Cross of Northern New England is partnering with local fire departments to provide free smoke alarm installations in York County.

These efforts are a part of the “Sound the Alarm” safety event, which is a program that helps make your home a safer place.

This event allows volunteers to visit homes and evaluate residents’ current smoke alarms, and in some cases, to install new ones.

CBS 13 reports that volunteers also educate homeowners on common causes for house fires, how to prevent them, and how to create an escape plan if an emergency occurs.

Officials with the Red Cross said on Saturday that they helped install 119 smoke alarms across the county.

If you are looking to install or replace your smoke detectors, the Red Cross will do it for free.
