Portland City Council approves ordinance restricting cooperation with ICE

The Portland City Council has voted to strictly prevent all city employees from cooperating with federal agents on immigration issues.

The new ordinance comes in response to January’s heavily criticized immigration enforcement surge.

The ordinance was written by the city’s legal team and the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine, which has brought the language to several cities.

Mayor Mark Dion cast the only vote against the ordinance, citing issues with some of the language.

Lewiston and Rockland have similar restrictions on ICE cooperation.
