A new poll shows Governor Janet Mills with 52 percent approval, but with a wide partisan gap.

Mills’ performance is almost universally approved by Democrats, but only 4 percent of Republicans approve of her performance as governor while the number is 43 percent for Independents, according to the latest University of New Hampshire “Pine Tree State Poll.”

The numbers also reveal a major political divide on issues as “Opposing Trump” (56 percent) was far and away considered the most important decision Mills made among people who approve her performance.

Among people who disapprove Mills performance, her most important decision was her “handling of LGBTQ issues (51 percent).

No other issue generated more than 11 percent as Mills’ “most important decision” among either group.

The poll also asked questions about Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins regarding the 2026 Senate Race.

Collins has announced she’ll run for reelection, but a majority, 71 percent, say she does not deserve to be reelected. The percentage is the highest among Democrats, 84 percent. But even 57 percent of Republicans do not favor her reelection, according to the poll.

The poll measured three of Collin’s possible Democratic opponents for Senator – Janet Mills, Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden. Among those Democrats and Collins, the poll showed Mills with the highest favorability at 47 percent. Collins had had the lowest favorability at 12 percent.

The new poll has a 3.2 percent margin of error
