Maine State Police are asking for public help as they investigate the killing of a paddleboarder on a pond in Union.

Officers identified 48-year-old Sunshine Stewart of Tenants Harbor as the victim, and an autopsy determined the manner of death to be homicide.

State Police are asking anyone who may have seen Stewart paddleboarding near 100 Acre Island on Crawford Pond last Wednesday between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM to contact them.

The Maine State Police tip line number is 207.624.7076. Anyone with information can also use the state police’s tip line by texting “MESPTIP” to 847411.

“Detectives from Major Crimes Unit Central have been pursuing all possible leads and continue to follow every investigative avenue,” Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a statement Monday afternoon. “We understand the community’s concerns and ask that residents remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.”

Maine Game Wardens were called to help the Union Fire Department and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in a search for a missing paddleboarder after 1 AM last Thursday and located the body of Stewart.

The cause of death is not being released at this time, according to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta.
