Portland Police are investigating break-ins at two West End businesses that happened overnight Wednesday morning.
The owner of the Ugly Duckling bakery and cafe on Danforth Street says someone broke in and tried to steal a cash register but fled when they realized she was doing prep work in the back.
In a plea on social media, owner Ilma Lopez called on local representatives to do more to keep communities safe.
It’s unclear if the incident is related to another break-in at Smalls, a nearby coffee shop on Brackett Street.
