Police are identifying the 4-year-old child and the gun owner in a fatal shooting in Lewiston over the weekend.

Officers say Jasper Smith died of a gunshot wound to the head, and a 9mm handgun registered to 36-year-old Robert McCoy was located at the residence.

Police say several family members were in the apartment when they arrived on the scene at 93 Pierce Street, apartment number two, just before 5 am Saturday.

Some family members have said the 4-year-old accidentally shot himself, but the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South, Lewiston Police Department, and DHHS are still investigating the incident.

The child was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was pronounced dead at 7:08 A.M. The child was then taken to the Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Police say no other information is being released at this time.
