A person is recovering after falling through ice on the Penobscot River in Bangor on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters say the person fell down an embankment behind Eastern Maine Medical Center on State Street and walked onto the river before falling through the ice 15 feet from the shore.

They say Bangor Police threw a rope to the person, who pulled themselves out, and firefighters then used a ladder on the embankment for the person to walk up from the river.

The person was taken to a hospital for observation.
