Federal authorities are involved in the investigation of a school bus crash that killed a 5-year-old boy in Standish this week.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be reviewing the crash along with Maine State Police and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The NTSB will have seven investigators at the scene on Friday, with a preliminary report expected within 30 days.

5-year-old Simon Gonzalez, a kindergartener at Edna Libby Elementary School, was hit and killed by a school bus near the school on Tuesday.

In a statement this afternoon, Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce asked for patience as that investigation continues.

Joyce also called for rhetoric and misinformation posted online about the incident to stop, saying it serves no purpose to anyone involved.
