Northern Maine Youth Shelter Closing Out of Lack of Funding

Northern Maine Youth Shelter Closing Out of Lack of Funding

The Northern Maine Lighthouse, Inc

The Northern Lighthouse Safe Harbor Youth Shelter in Northern Maine’s Mars Hill will close down later this month because of a lack of funding and resources to operate.

The Youth Shelter says it’ll officially close next Tuesday, February 24, after providing emergency shelter, safety, and support services to homeless and runaway youth for three years.

The move comes after Northern Lighthouse announced in November its Transitional Living Program for homeless youth in Aroostook County was forced to shut down following the denial of a federal grant that funded the service.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to our staff, community partners, donors, and advocates who have stood alongside us in serving vulnerable youth,” Northern Lighthouse said in a news release. “We remain committed to supporting youth in our community and will work closely with partner organizations to ensure a smooth transition for those currently receiving services.”
