A New York man fell onto the Maine Turnpike from the top of a moving bus Friday morning.

Maine State Police say 35-year-old Derrick McDuffy climbed on the roof of a Concord Coach Lines bus in Kittery.

Witnesses said McDuffy complained about feeling overheated and opened the emergency hatch before climbing on top of the bus.

The bus driver tried to pull over when they realized what was happening, sending McDuffy off the roof and onto the highway near mile 2 southbound around 11:15 a.m. Friday.

Motorists and bus passengers came to McDuffy’s aid before first responders arrived.

He suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The turnpike was down to one lane but had reopened before noon.

A second bus arrived to pick up the passengers.

The incident is under investigation.
