A fourth Market Basket is coming to Maine as developers of the Town Center project in Scarborough have announced it’ll be the center’s first anchor retail store.

The grocery chain will open the new store in the fall of 2026 as part of The Downs, which is a mixed-use project in Scarborough.

Market Basket currently has 90 stores in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine, including stores in Westbrook, Biddeford and Topsham.

The Scarborough location will have 80,000 sq. ft.

“The Downs presented a vibrant opportunity for Market Basket to be located within a true Town Center, with people and supporting services all within walking distance,” said Joe Schmidt, Director of Operations for Market Basket. “The whole team is very much looking forward to bringing Market Basket and ‘more food for your dollar’ shopping to Scarborough and the surrounding communities,” Schmidt said.

The Town Center at The Downs has been in the works since 2006, when residents and municipal leaders added it to the Comprehensive Plan.

Market Basket is headquartered in Tewksbury, MA, in the suburbs northwest of Boston.

According to its website, the store was started in 1908 by a Greek couple that had moved Lowell, Massachusetts. The couple brought their farming and agriculture background to the U.S. and began to cultivate crops and tend livestock.
