Minor Earthquake Hits Historic Maine Island

Monhegan Associates Inc.

The U.S. Geological Survey is confirming an earthquake has hit the historic midcoast island of Monhegan.

The magnitude 2 quake shook the ground at a depth of 6.7 miles about 1.8 miles north of the island, at about 3:13 a.m. Sunday.

There have been about 170 recorded earthquakes in Maine since 1997.

One of the strongest quakes in Maine occurred on Oct. 16, 2012, when a 4.5 magnitude earthquake shook the ground in East Waterboro, according to the Maine Geological Survey.

Monhegan Island is known as a tourist destination and is about an hour ferry ride from Port Clyde.

According to Monhegan Welcome, there are nine miles of hiking trails on the island, which has the highest ocean cliffs on the Maine coastline.

Lobster fishing is also a contributor to the local economy in Monhegan.
