A 32-year-old Down East man is dead after crashing his car in the town of Sullivan on Tuesday morning.

Hancock County deputies say Gared Birdtail of Milbridge was driving west on Route 1 near Taunton Drive at what witnesses described as high speed and failed to make a curve in the road.

Deputies say the car went off the right side of the road and down an embankment, where it hit a tree, rolled onto its roof, and hit another tree before coming to rest.

They say Birdtail was alone in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries he suffered in the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Deputies say a 2010 Dodge Avenger received significant disabling damage in the crash, which was reported at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
