A man accused of trying to break into a woman’s home in Auburn was taken into custody after a standoff Thursday morning.
The situation unfolded in the early morning hours near 50 Western Promenade.
A woman told police her neighbor, 39-year-old Matthew Couturier, had broken her window and took her dog.
It’s not clear what happened to the dog.
The woman says Couturier also assaulted her on Wednesday and was pounding on her door that night after she saw him on his porch holding a knife.
Auburn Police and a Maine State Police Tactical Team were called in to surround Couturier’s home early Thursday.
After refusing to come out for several hours, Couturier was taken into custody around 9:10 a.m.
He was charged with attempted burglary, domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing, criminal mischief, theft, and creating a police stand-off.
He’s being held at Androscoggin County Jail on $500 cash bail.
