Maine state representative dies after battle with cancer

Maine State Rep. Kathy Javner has died after a long battle with cancer.

Maine House Republicans say Rep. Javner, who represented Chester and parts of Penobscot County, died on Saturday.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, as well as Gov. Janet Mills, issued statements offering condolences.

In a statement, Gov. Mills said: “I was deeply saddened to learn that Representative Kathy Javner passed away following her courageous battle with breast cancer. Fiercely devoted to the people of Northern Penobscot County, Representative Javner served her constituents in the Maine House with distinction. On behalf of the people of Maine, I offer condolences to Representative Javner’s family and community.”

Maine State Rep. Reagan Paul also issued a statement: “My seatmate, my mentor and my friend Representative Kathy Javner has gone home to be with her Savior. The loss is palpable. Kathy was a warrior for the people of the State of Maine, and she used that spirit in her long battle with cancer. I don’t have any more words beyond these for now. My heart is broken,”

Javner leaves behind a husband and three children.
