Maine State Police are mourning the loss of a K-9 involved in a standoff, chase, and police-involved shooting Monday in Portage.

Officers say K-9 Preacher was shot in the abdomen while being sent to apprehend the suspect in the incident.

They say the dog was immediately rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic in Presque Isle for surgery but died early Tuesday morning.

He was surrounded by his handler, Sgt. Jonathan Russell, and several members of the State Police tactical team when he passed away.

The State Police issued a public statement with condolences over the loss of Preacher, who was a two-year-old Belgian Malinois.

“K-9 Preacher was more than just a working dog—he was a dedicated partner, a protector, and a hero,” said Maine State Police Colonel Ross. “Most people will never understand the sacrifices made by our K-9 teams, but last night, Preacher made the ultimate sacrifice to protect others from harm.”

The Maine State Police extends its heartfelt condolences to Sgt. Jonathan Russell and the entire K-9 Unit. The loss of Preacher is a profound reminder of the courage and dedication of our law enforcement officers and their K-9 partners.
