Maine State Police Investigate Gunfire at CMP Substations

A 54-year-old Fairfield man is in the Kennebec County Jail after turning himself in for numerous gunshots that occurred at power substations in three towns early Sunday.

Police say they were sent to the Coopers Mills substation off Barton Road in Windsor after receiving a report of shots fired at 12:15 am.

Officers were then sent to the substation on Benton Avenue in Winslow at approximately 3:59 am and at approximately 4:15 am, officers from the Augusta Police Department were sent to a report of shots fired at the substation located on Capital Street in Augusta.

Police say they found evidence consistent with gunfire and damage to installations. The incidents appear to be similar in nature.

No one was injured.

There is no threat to the public.

They say Thomas Welch turned himself in to the Winslow Police Department. He was taken into custody by the Winslow Police Department and will be transported to the Kennebec County Jail.

Welch is charged with Aggravated Criminal Mischief and Aggravated Reckless Conduct.

Maine State Police say the crimes remain an active investigation involving the Maine State Police, Winslow Police Department, and Augusta Police Department. Additional information will be released when appropriate.
