Five school districts in Maine are facing lawsuits over policies regarding transgender policies.

CBS 13 News reports The Maine Human Rights Commission filed the suit claiming the school districts are violating the rights of transgender students.

The lawsuit highlights how the state and the Trump Administration have differing views on how to handle transgender policies in school.

MSAD 70 in Hodgdon, RSU 24 in Sullivan, RSU 73 in Livermore Falls, Baileyville School District and Richmond School Department are the defendants in the lawsuit.

Each district adopted policies that conflict with the Maine Human Rights Act, which prevents discrimination based on gender identity.

Equality Maine Executive Director Gia Drew said while Equality Maine supports the lawsuit, they believe it shouldn’t have gotten this far.

“Federal Law hasn’t changed with the new President and despite his executive orders, that doesn’t change the law either, So Maine law is still in place here,” Drew said.

According to the commission, each district has a chance to respond to the pending lawsuit but they aren’t sure about how long it would take.
