A question about transgender students will not appear on the state ballot after a ruling from Maine’s highest court.

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled Friday that the Secretary of State was right to invalidate more than 1,000 signatures supporting the referendum.

The question would ask voters if they approve of a ban on transgender athletes competing in girls’ sports and a requirement for students to use bathrooms based on their sex at birth.

Hours after the decision, the group Protect Girls Sports said the decision disenfranchises Maine voters and has filed a suit in federal court.

The suit alleged that some out-of-state circulators forged signatures and left the petition unattended at polling locations.
