Maine lawmakers are reacting after the U.S. Supreme Court’s major decision on Friday declaring President Trump’s emergency tariffs illegal.

Maine Democratic Congresswoman Chellie Pingree praised the 6-3 decision, calling the president’s use of tariffs arbitrary, punitive and not helpful to the economy.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins said the ruling reaffirms that only Congress has the constitutional authority to impose tariffs.

Independent Sen. Angus King, who’s spoken out against the tariffs, called the ruling a civics lesson for the President and Congress.

Democratic Rep. Jared Golden said that while he supports tariffs, they should be passed by Congress and not imposed by executive action.

President Trump says he’ll seek out ways to impose tariffs under other laws.
