Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey is joining 11 other attorneys general in legal action against Elon Musk and his group, known as the Department of Government Efficiency.

President Trump has confirmed Musk and his group have access to the Treasury Department payment system, which sends out money for the entire federal government and contains personal private information

The Attorney’s general say Trump does not have the authority to give away private information and Musk is not authorized to receive it.

“As the richest man in the world, Elon Musk is not used to being told ‘no,’ but in our country, no one is above the law,” a statement from the attorney’s general said. “The President does not have the power to give away our private information to anyone he chooses, and he cannot cut federal payments approved by Congress.”

The attorney’s general say they’ll file a lawsuit to block the activity, although they did not specify any details.

Musk is officially serving under President Trump as a special government employee, and Trump has given him broad authority to pursue cost-cutting measures.

Musk has vowed to cut federal spending by $2 billion.

Frey was joined in issuing a statement Thursday by the attorneys general of New York, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Minnesota, NevadaRhode Island, and Vermont.
