Lawmakers in Augusta are taking up a bill that would do away with inspection requirements for most vehicles in Maine.
The bill’s summary states that inspections would no longer be required for vehicles except for commercial vehicles, trailers and semitrailers.
Supporters of the bill say new cars generally don’t need inspections, crashes are often not caused by mechanical issues, and monetary loss to the state would be negligible
Maine State Police and the auto industry have pushed back against similar bills in the past, which have failed in the state legislature multiple times.
