Police are investigating after human remains were found in Lewiston over the weekend.

Maine State Police say the remains were discovered by a nearby resident in the Garcelon Bog at the end of Russell Street in Lewiston.

Officers say initial findings indicate that the remains have been there for an extended period, and there is no danger to the public.

The remains have been taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for identification and further examination.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South is assisting the Lewiston Police Department with the investigation. Also assisting on scene were Maine State Police Evidence Response Technicians, Maine Game Wardens, and Lewiston Public Works.

The remains were discovered by the resident on Saturday afternoon. Police say an investigation is ongoing, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
