An Aroostook County woman who was held hostage during an incident in 2021 has filed a suit against police, claiming a deputy fired a shot that went through her chest and into the suspect.

Police fatally shot Jacob Wood in April of 2021 at Lena Gerber’s home in Mars Hill. According to the Bangor Daily News, the Attorney General’s report states that Gerber, who was being held with a knife to her throat, was grazed by a bullet fired by Deputy Isaac Ward.

In a suit filed by Gerber, she claims a bullet injured her arm, went through her chest, fracturing her sternum, and then into Wood.

The suit claims police didn’t give Wood a chance to surrender. The Attorney General’s Office says Wood ignored multiple commands to let Gerber go before he was shot.

Ward was exonerated by the state for acting in defense of the hostage.
