The Maine CDC is warning the public about browntail moth caterpillars.
The caterpillars shed tiny toxic hairs that can cause a skin rash like poison ivy, and can cause breathing trouble if inhaled.
The Maine Forest Service has found evidence of browntail moth caterpillars in all 16 Maine counties. The greatest risk for exposure is between April and July.
They’ve offered tips to avoid the caterpillars, including spraying down vegetation with a hose to prevent any hairs from becoming airborne if you’re doing activities that might stir up the hairs.
They also recommend tightly securing clothing, taking cool showers and changing clothes after outdoor activities in infested areas.
