A 69-year-old Ellsworth man will serve three years in prison after being sentenced Thursday for a shootout with police in 2023.

Jeffrey Paine was acquitted of attempted murder but found guilty of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.

Payne exchanged gunfire with police in his apartment building while they were attempting to arrest him on an outstanding warrant.

His gun initially went off accidentally when he tried the close the door on officers.

Officers did fire back, hitting Paine in the arm but because he didn’t drop his gun, police had to subdue him with a stun gun.

Payne will not serve probation after his sentence, but will not be able to possess a gun again as a convicted felon.
