Crews Battle Large Northern Maine Fire for 4-Hours

Northern Maine large gravel pit fore - Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department

Firefighters in northern Maine say it took them four hours and 6,500 gallons of water to put out a large fire in a gravel pit.

The Caribou Fire & Ambulance Department says the exact location of the fire was hard to determine, and flames and smoke were visible from Route 1 in Connor.

They say crews battled heavy smoke and wind while working to suppress the fire. Once on scene, they say crews began applying water to suppress the fire and soak the surrounding area to prevent the fire from spreading into the nearby forest.

The Maine Forest Service coordinated with the property owner to provide a bulldozer and operator to assist crews with containing the fire and preventing further spread.

No injuries were reported.

The Caribou Fire & Ambulance Department released information on the fire Saturday, which they referred to as a quarter-acre slash pile fire in a gravel pit off Beaulieu Road. They reported the fie to have taken place at 9:15 p.m. Thursday.
