State and local offices in Maine are closed on Monday, with a blizzard warning now in place for the Portland area as well as other parts of the coast from 7 am until 10 pm.
Governor Janet Mills has closed state offices with a powerful nor’easter expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds to the region. The city of Portland has also announced its offices will be closed, and Monday’s 5 pm city council meeting will be held by Zoom only.
The National Weather Service is now forecasting wind up to 50 mph on Monday, with snow accumulation up to a foot in some coastal areas.
The Maine Emergency Management Agency is warning that heavy snow and wind could bring whiteout conditions at times.
Strong winds may bring down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages.
MEMA says coastal impacts will include large waves, possible splash-over, and coastal erosion. Seas will be extremely dangerous.

“We urge everyone to stay informed and exercise caution during this storm,” said MEMA Director Pete Rogers. “Travel is discouraged. However, if travel is necessary, allow extra time, reduce your speed, and have your emergency kit ready to ensure your safety and the safety of others on our roadways.”

The Maine Department of Transportation (Maine DOT) reminds the public to give plow trucks plenty of room and to avoid crowding or passing working snowplows, especially during reduced visibility.

Winter storm parking bans are in place in Portland, Scarborough, and Old Orchard Beach, among other cities and towns.
