Chief of Maine Capitol Police on leave following altercation at a bar

The Chief of the Maine Capitol Police is now on leave after he allegedly assaulted a police officer Friday night in Hallowell.

Police said 62-year-old Matthew Clancy got into a scuffle with an officer outside of the Quarry Tap Room after a fight inside the bar.

The head of security at the bar told police that Clancy was seen taking pictures of people inside the bar, including women, before being escorted out.

The case would have been handled by District Attorney Natasha Irving, but she told our info partners at CBS 13 news on Tuesday that she’s recusing herself.

Irving said she’s had a “positive working relationship” with Clancy and didn’t want to be the person to decide whether or not there was criminal conduct.

Irving says the case is being passed on to another District Attorney.

Clancy faces misdemeanor charges of assault, refusing to submit to arrest and disorderly conduct.
