Maine’s Ethics Commission has voted to fine the campaign of Republican candidate for governor Bobby Charles for violating election laws.

The Maine Democratic Party requested an investigation over accusations the Charles’s campaign accepted contributions that exceeded the $2,075 individual limit, totaling over $25,000.

The campaign has returned portions of contributions and amended its finance report, but says some oversize donations are likely due to donor errors or duplicate reporting.

In a unanimous vote on Monday, the commission moved to fine the campaign $22,700, calling the oversights a “significant error.”

In a statement Monday, the campaign said that it “worked in good faith” with the commission to return the contributions.
