A controversial bill in Augusta that would limit local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration officials has been tabled for the next legislative session.

Gov. Janet Mills said she would not be signing the bill, giving her the choice to either veto the measure or let it become law without her signature next session.

A Mills spokesperson said the bill is too broad and confusing.

The bill, proposed by South Portland Rep. Deqa Dhalac, comes as the Trump administration commits to mass deportations.

The bill got approval in the House and Senate last month, with the governor’s 10-day deadline to sign the bill into law passing on Monday.

On the WGAN Morning News Wednesday, Democratic House Speaker Ryan Fecteau said the governor cannot take action on any bills until lawmakers return for at least three more days.

The legislature is expected to return for the next session in January, but they could convene earlier for a special session.
