Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows says she wants assurances that ICE officers won’t be at polling places during the upcoming election season.

Bellows has joined eight other secretaries of state to send a letter to the Department of Homeland Security seeking confirmation ICE agents won’t be deployed.

The letter asks for written confirmation from DHS, even though some Homeland Security administrators have said no immigration agents would be sent to polling stations.

“That we even have to ask for written assurances that the federal government won’t deploy armed agents to the polls is a sad and frightening sign of the times we’re in,” said Bellows.

Bellows says the Trump administration has already tried to interfere with elections by requesting voter rolls, which are protected by privacy laws.

The letter is addressed to Secretary of Homeland Security nominee Markwayne Mullin.

Former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, who Trump removed on March 5, said on March 3 before the Senate Judiciary Committee, “There are no plans to have ICE officers at our polling locations.”
