AUBURN – An Auburn man was taken to the hospital after a nearly 3-hour long standoff with police on the Jenkins Memorial Footbridge.  Police say they received the call at 10:15 on Sunday morning reporting a man threating to jump from the bridge into the shallow waters of the Androscoggin River below.
Police say the man was under the influence of narcotics and kept police at bay for nearly 3 hours before police finally convinced him to climb back onto the bridge to safety.  He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Auburn Police offered their thanks to the Auburn Fire Department and other local agencies for staging the scene and being prepared to respond in the event the man jumped into the river.
