AG’s office rules deputies justified in fatal shooting of Hartford, ME man last March

Maine’s Attorney General has ruled that deputies were justified in fatally shooting a knife-wielding man last year.

CBS 13 reports that on March 29th, the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office received a call from an 80-year-old man who said his stepson, 51-year-old Eric Newell, assaulted him at a home in the town of Hartford. A standoff ensued with Newell holding a knife to his own throat and telling deputies to shoot him.

Despite tasing him, Newell charged at the officers, with Deputies Reece Rodrique and Derek MacDonald fatally shooting him. Newell died at the scene.

Attorney General Aaron Frey said the two were justified because they believed Newell was about to kill or seriously injure them when he charged.
