The 60th annual Yarmouth Clam Festival takes place this weekend and Chelsie DiConzo, Community Events Director for the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce, said the nice weather could make it one of the biggest turnouts yet.

While DiConzo says “there’s something for everyone here,” the festival comes with some staples in the food department. According to Maine Made, more than 6,000 pounds of clams and 13,500 Lime Rickeys are expected to be consumed. The original sugar spoon for the Downeast Lime Rickeys, like the festival, is ready to serve Yarmouth for a 60th year.

Alongside the famous foods, DiConzo says “top notch entertainment” is in order. A parade, carnival, live music, and various other events will take place. Additionally, attendees can expect a throwback to the 60s with the “Come Together: A Retro Rewind to the 60s” theme.

The Maine State Clam Shucking Contest is among the events, and features WGAN’s own Matt Gagnon and Danny Martignetti, who placed third last year. Other highlights include a car show and a bike race.

The support of non-profits and the state of Maine as a whole are big goals of the festival. Over 30 non-profits rely on the festival for funding and the festival is working towards “a stronger commitment to sustainability and waste reduction.” “As Maine’s largest free admissions festival … this community event is really unlike any other thing in the state,” said DiConzo.

Festivities kick off Friday, July 18, at 10 a.m. More information can be found on the Clam Festival website.
