The City of South Portland received a $1 million Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund Grant.

The grant will be loaned or sub-granted out to individual property owners, supporting “environmental cleanup activities and program outreach.” (City of South Portland). “Brownfield” properties are properties where “potential redevelopment or reuse may be complicated by the presence (or potential presence) of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.” (City of South Portland).

Some examples of potential property sites include active and former auto repair shops, warehouses, and factories. Additionally eligible are residential and historic buildings.

The city received the maximum grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, doubling its 2022 grant. South Portland has up to five years to utilize the funding.

South Portland Assistant City Manager Joshua Reny said, “We’re very excited about continuing this work with EPA and seeing the positive impact the grants will make in our community over the next decade.”

Citizens and property owners can submit requests for redevelopment sites on the city’s website.
