The results are in!

WCLZ listeners have deemed The Beatles’ Abbey Road to be THE most essential album of all time. Over 5,000 people voted and only ONE lucky person is going home with all 64 essential shrink-wrapped albums on vinyl from Bull Moose, a Mobile Fidelity StudioDeck turntable from New England HiFi and a trip to Vinalhaven, ME.

Congratulations to the winner of WCLZ’s Vinyl Heaven contest, David from Gardiner!

What is WCLZ’s Vinyl Heaven?

An immediate upgrade to the way you enjoy music at home.

Picture a room in your house with a brand-new Mobile Fidelity StudioDeck from New England HiFi. And what would you want to play on this brand new, high-end turntable? How about 64 shrink-wrapped, essential albums from Bull Moose, as curated by the WCLZ staff? It’s an instantly great record collection, or a valuable addition to your existing one.

All can be yours, with a trip for two to Vinalhaven, ME thrown in (because the staff also likes dad puns.)

Better yet, we’re asking you to vote in a championship style bracket to determine what you, the WCLZ listener, deem to be THE essential record of all time. There will be four matchups every weekday, and each day that you vote is an entry to win the grand prize.

Here’s the voting schedule (click the links for each voting page):

WCLZ’s Vinyl Heaven is supported by:

A potentially unnecessary message from the WCLZ staff:

Note that at no time do we use the word “best” in this contest. Our intention was to make a list of 64 albums that would start a great record collection, 64 albums that the staff would play for a visitor from space when they asked to hear some records, 64 LPs that you might already own, but would welcome a fresh shrink-wrapped copy of. We hope you have fun making some tough choices.

Also note we were constrained by availability. As we made the bracket, we learned the last time Muddy Waters “Folk Singer” was pressed on vinyl was probably in the 1960’s. Sheryl Crow “Sheryl Crow” has NEVER been pressed on vinyl. There’s a significant gap between 1986-2000 [The CD era?] where vinyl pressing is lacking. Loads of titles are out of print or “between pressings.”

Titles that could have made WCLZ’s list were they still in print as a single LP in no particular order:

Joni Mitchell “Blue”

Talking Heads “Speaking in Tongues”

Peter Gabriel “So”

Black Keys “Brothers”

Bonnie Raitt “Nick of Time”

Vampire Weekend “Vampire Weekend”

Tracy Chapman “Tracy Chapman”

Coldplay “A Rush of Blood to the Head”

Bob Dylan “Time Out of Mind”

Indigo Girls “Indigo Girls”

Ramones “Ramones”

Tony Bennett “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”

Due to the nature of our programs that are heard on-line over the internet, contests may not be heard at all on 98.9 WCLZ. Contests heard on the radio station’s internet audio stream may be slightly delayed from the time the contests are heard on the broadcast station, and will be running behind the broadcast signal. Thus, all contests heard on the internet are delayed. This delay can last for as much as 30 seconds or more. This means that when 98.9 WCLZ contests are played that require a specific caller to telephone the radio station (such as “Caller number 9 when you hear the sound effect”), listeners to the on-line audio stream may be at a disadvantage in participating over those listeners who hear the contests on-air.

All 98.9 WCLZ contests are open to all eligible Maine residents who live or work within 75 miles of our transmitter 18 or older and have not won anything on 98.9 WCLZ in the past 30 days or any prize valued at $600 or more in the past 6 months. Only one winner per household is permitted within 30 days after a household has a winner. Any prize awarded to an ineligible listener will be deemed null and void, and an alternate eligible winner may be named.

Employees of 98.9 WCLZ, Portland Radio Group and its ultimate parent company, Saga Communications, Inc., their advertising agencies, affiliates, contest sponsors, employees and immediate families of each, and employees of all media of mass communication within a one hundred mile radius of the 98.9 WCLZ main studio are not eligible to win any contest. Immediate family includes the spouse, great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of the employee and his/her spouse. This also includes individuals for whom the employee is current legal guardian.

No purchase necessary. 98.9 WCLZ’s sole responsibility will be to award the prize. 98.9 WCLZ will have no further responsibility in connection with the prize if the prize winner, for any reason, cannot or decides not to use any of the prizes. Winners will be responsible for all federal and state taxes, and any fees and incidentals. Prizes are not transferrable or redeemable for cash.

Full contest rules available at 98.9 WCLZ studios located at 420 Western Avenue between the hours of 9am and 5pm; or by logging onto 989WCLZ.com.
