September is officially Coastal Cleanup Month, and we’ll be celebrating with the Maine Coastal Program all month long by encouraging you to help keep our Maine shores clean. Instead of a single day in September dedicated to a mass cleanup, you can show your love for Maine and its thousands of miles of beautiful coastline in 2021 by participating all month long!
What do you have to do to participate?
While you can no longer register to coordinate a cleanup location in Maine, you can still volunteer at a number of different coastal locations. Head to the Maine Coastal Program’s page to check out the full volunteer list of options, and reach out to the designated coordinator to join their team! Still not seeing a beach near you? Feel free to take matters into your own hands and cleanup any stretch you like! While it won’t be officially recorded by the Maine Coastal Program, our pristine Maine beaches will thank you!
Want to help spread the word? Download a Maine Coastal Cleanup flyer and hang it up in your favorite places with community bulletin boards (or on a good ol’ fashioned telephone pole!) Download the PDF here.
The International Coastal Cleanup was established over 35 years ago to address the problem of trash in our oceans and on our coasts. The Ocean Conservancy manages the ICC and maintains a database of all the items that volunteers around the world record when collecting trash. As of 2020, the one-day event in September has become a whole month of Cleanups around the world! See the 2020 report here (PDF, 32 pages).
