Here is what Maureen wrote in her entry:
I love music. I play music. I write music. I was the teenager walking around with one finger up at the Phish concerts. I have a song to wake up, one to go to bed, and one for everything in between.
In 2016, I stopped listening to music.
My father had been diagnosed with Leukemia and was fading fast. All my best memories were with my dad. We learned to garden and raise animals together. He introduced me to some of my favorite musicians, such as Taj Mahal and Willie Nelson. There was no song, no lyric, no melody that was able to release the pain I felt inside. I lived in silence, feeling completely numb.
In April of 2016, the Lumineers released “Cleopatra”. A big Lumineers fan, I had been waiting patiently for their sophomore album. Despite my loss of musical interest, I decided to give it a dutiful listen. As the first chords of “Sleep on the Floor” rang through my speakers, I felt something inside me shake loose. By the time the album was finished, I had cried months of pent-up tears. Later, I did some research on the album. Guitarist and lead vocalist Wesley Shulz shared that although his father had died ten years ago, he was just beginning to write about that experience in this album.
My father died in May of 2016. All seven of my siblings made it to the hospital in time to say goodbye. When we left the hospital, I drove my siblings home. To break the unbearable silence, I turned on Cleopatra. In the back seat, I heard my 12-year-old brother begin to softly cry.
In August, the Lumineers came to Thompson’s Point. The timing could not have been better. After a big loss, life somehow goes on. There never seems to be enough time to truly grieve. For me, this show was a night where I could put aside the demands of life and allow myself to feel the loss of my dad. The Lumineers opened the show with Sleep on the Floor. As the chords rang out across the open field, I felt the same release I had felt when I first listened to the album. During the show, I ran into new friends from Portland and old friends from my hometown of Bethel. New and old relationships blended together to stand with me, hold me, and sing with me. We were standing towards the back, near a chain link enclosure. Halfway through the show, the band packed up all their instruments and moved into this space. I was leaned up against the fence with the best seat in the house as they sang Gale Song. Wesley sang, ”Oh this too shall pass, this loneliness won’t last for long”. As I stood there surrounded by my friends, I felt a glimmer of hope through these words.

- Contestants who register to participate on our website may be required to produce a printed copy of proof of registration before being allowed to participate in the contest.
- Due to the nature of our programs that are heard on-line over the internet, contests may not be heard at all on WCLZ. Contests heard on the radio station’s internet audio stream may be slightly delayed from the time the contests are heard on the broadcast station, and will be running behind the broadcast signal. Thus, all contests heard on the internet are delayed. This delay can last for as much as 30 seconds or more. This means that when WCLZ contests are played that require a specific caller to telephone the radio station (such as “Caller number 9 when you hear the sound effect”), listeners to the on-line audio stream may be at a disadvantage in participating over those listeners who hear the contests on-air.
- A copy of these rules is available during business hours at the WCLZ studios 420 Western Avenue, South Portland, Maine 04106
