Our Thankful Tree
altText
It's a constant battle as an adult to remain grateful, thankful and to focus on the good. For kids, I think they live in the moment so much that it's even harder. This Thanksgiving, my family and I made a "Thankful Tree." Each of us write any "thing" we feel thankful for on a construction paper leaf and hang in on the "tree." (It's a branch from the backyard painted in a cheery yellow. ) So far, my 5-year-old daughter is thankful for an assortment of things, including: family, our dog, water, and her tree house. Me? I've added leaves for my family members, "funny things," and "music." It's a nice excercise! (And a pretty attractive Thanksgiving centerpiece, no?)

What do I have in common with Chris Martin?
altText
One more thing than I thought, apparently.

Coldplay tried hypnotherapy during the making of their new album, Mylo Xyloto.

I used hypnosis to give birth twice! It may sound quite far fetched, but wow, did it work! When I take on something new (like, say, pregnancy) I ted to over-research, and read everything I can get my hands on. Hypnosis kept coming up. So I used Hypnobabies and had two natural births.

Unfortunately, Coldplay didn't have as much success. (Read about it here.)

And I didn't name my kids quite as creatively as Chris and Gwenyth either.

So we only have a little in common. But I'm glad to see hypnosis becoming more mainstream. I can't say enough about how well it really does work, when done right!

Wizard of Oz Halloween
altText
So, after a month of planning, we had our Wizard of Oz Halloween. As might be typical for a mom, all I wanted was one group picture. Unfortunately, we had bad lighting and a self-admittedly bad photographer, so we couldn't quite capture the event as I had hoped. But never-the-less, here's our crew. From left to right: Tin Man, Glinda, Cowardly Lion, Wicked Witch (me!), Scarecrow, Dorothy. And in front, a flying monkey! Mostly homemade costumes, lots of fun, and way too much candy. That's a successful Halloween!

Happy Halloween
altText
Happy Halloween! Even if there's snow on the ground and we're going to be slipping on ice while trick-or-treating, we're still going to have fun! My daughter is Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, which has inspired the rest of our group to fill in the cast. My 1-year-old will be the Scarecrow, my daughter's best friend is the Cowardly Lion, her uncle is the Tin Man, their dog is a flying monkey, their mom is Glinda, and me, well, I'll embrace my role as the Wicked Witch! I've never dont a group costume before. This should be fun! Also, a big thank you to my mom, who made my girls' costumes. It left me time to do things like carve pumpkins! We went for traditional this year...

Still Smiling

I'm finding it consistently true that it doesn't matter how big an artist is. If I'm a fan, it's a huge thrill and honor to get the chance to host them in Studio Z. Today, that was evident once again as I got to bring Mike Viola in, before his show with Rachael Yamagata at Port City Music Hall. Mike has a few claims to fame, but mostly he just makes great pop music. And he's one of the nicest guys I've had in Studio Z. I'm talking "Rhett Miller nice" and that's pretty damn nice.

From the "Artists Lara thinks you should know about" file, Mike Viola's performance and interview in Studio Z:

Indie Rock(ets)

It works for music. Now, if you have the inclination, time and money (or sponsors) apparently you can launch your own rocket into space. Check out this amazing video of a homemade rocket's journey, captured on Flip cameras. I'm especially impressed by how clearly you can see the curvature of the Earth, and the sounds (noisy, then silent, then loud!)

My daughter and I are studying space right now, so I'm curious to see her reaction to this one. Hopefully, it's not, "Let's do that!"

Barenaked Ladies as Toronto's Nirvana
altText

Last week there was an article in a Canadian publication noting that it's been 20 years since the release of Nirvana's Nevermind and the same amount of time since the release of Barenaked Ladies' Yellow Tape. Without judging the music, the author noted that both releases broke ground.

Unfortunately, we'll never know what Nirvana would have sounded like in 2011. But just because Barenaked Ladies went on to have "novelty" hits, their impact (especially on the Canadian music landscape) should not be negated.

What's your gut reaction when the author compares Barenaked Ladies to Nirvana? Read the entire article here: http://www.thegridto.com/culture/music/1991-the-year-bnl-defined-toronto-indie-rock/
