Katy Perry has hinted her new single Roar is about her on/off boyfriend John Mayer.

The singer has scored a big hit with her latest single, soaring to the top of the pop charts following the song’s release at the end of August after her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.

She has now spoken about the song’s inspiration, revealing she wrote the track while reeling from a break-up, leading fans to speculate the subject is her current boyfriend Mayer, who she recently reunited with after a split earlier this year.

Perry tells BBC Radio 1, “Road is a song I wrote as I was a little bit upset. I found myself having a break with my boyfriend, who I loved very much and it really hurt my heart. I said to myself, ‘I need to see what is going on with me and make sure I’m all good.’ When you break up with someone it’s easy to say they are crazy and think it’s all them, but, honestly, maybe there is 50 per cent responsibility on your behalf. It was just time for me to be honest with myself.”

Mayer recently revealed he was blown away heard Roar, telling Billboard, “I remember hearing it, going like, ‘Wow, what an interesting experience’ to hear something that you identify as massive before it’s massive… In a way you get swallowed up by it, it’s so big. Because it’s such an incredibly big song that it doesn’t need you to tell anybody, while you’re eating lunch, (that) millions of people are going to be dancing on tables to that.”
